Client HM Conco

Location Philadelphia, PA

Scope 42,000 SF

Located in the Roxborough area of Philadelphia, The Aster is a 5-story apartment building that offers refreshing open-air privacy.

This part of Philadelphia is very sloped, which created many unique design challenges and opportunities. However, we were able to meet the client’s goals by designing with the slope, rather than against it. We created a habitable basement space below grade, which allowed us to keep ceiling heights high while also fitting 5 floors within the area’s height restrictions.

The existing topography also allowed us to create a sunken residential entry courtyard, which creates privacy from the street. Other exterior spaces include private balconies, terraces, and a green roof deck with city views. The material design scheme consists of exposed wine-colored brick on the lower floors to align with the area, while floors 2-5 feature fiber cement panels.

We also provided interior design services for the entry lobby, corridors, and the fitness center. The client was particularly inspired by many of the famous casinos and hotels in Atlantic City, so our design concept conveys a traditional elegance. Throughout the space, exquisite gold art deco elements contrast with sleek and modern furnishings to create an overall lavish atmosphere. Black and white accent the central cool dark green, emboldening the lobby and corridors with visually striking effects. Functionally, the lobby also includes a package room to keep the clutter of boxes out of the lobby.
