The building formerly housed a student health clinic to serve residents of the College. The relocation of the clinic to a new purpose-built facility provided an opportunity for additional student residences on the campus and a student activity center focused specifically on the needs of the resident population.
The upper floors of the building will be converted to twenty-three new student residences. The ground floor is designed to house new spaces for group and quiet study, art and general-purpose classrooms, and miscellaneous support spaces including bathrooms, laundry, and a printing center. All of these amenities will be dedicated to the use of residents of the Douglass Residential College.
