The new unit accommodates eight patient treatment stations, including one private treatment room. The bays feature extended side clearances to better accommodate dialysis equipment and provide additional separation between patients. Due to existing conditions and location of the corridor outside, the unit is relatively narrow. Two new sets of automatic double doors were added to facilitate patient transportation and reduce bed traffic passing in front of patient stations.
The interior design package includes a new epoxy floor with integral base to contain spills as well as to withstand the caustic chemicals used to sanitize equipment within the space. As part of a cross-disciplinary team, we coordinated the relocation of the clinical unit to an adjacent underused nursing unit so that the construction could be completed faster and in a single phase. A calm color palette, patient-controlled lighting, and natural light create a healing environment for patients.
A new air handling unit was installed to serve the space along with a new central treated water system with distribution to each bay. The piping to dialysis boxes is hidden within a cabinet running the length of the space which was designed to look more like millwork to reduce the clinical appearance of the space. A continuous horizontal headwall provides gases and outlets to each bay and spans over exterior windows on a plastic laminate backing.
Other new support spaces included Equipment/Supply Storage, Equipment Repair Room, Medication Room, Clean and Soiled Workrooms, Staff Lounge, and Patient Toilet.
