Our client was looking to build a new multi-family building that stood out from the sea of converted brick breweries and warehouses in the rapidly developing Brewerytown neighborhood of Philadelphia. We took inspiration from the square lot, leaning into the idea of boxes upon boxes.
We built large protruding bays across the façade, maximizing each unit’s living spaces with these additional “boxes”. These bays, along the West Jefferson side of the building, serve as a design feature and also provide the residential units with unique floor plans with extended living and bedroom space as well as interspersed balcony space. Accentuated by contrasting cladding, the oversized bays give BRÜBOX its distinctive, checkerboard appearance while creating outdoor balconies for enjoying views of the eclectic, rapidly growing neighborhood.
“We wanted to make the windows as big as possible to get as much light in as we could. They kind of throw off the scale of the building in a nice way.”
Sergio Coscia, Principal
The bays feature larger, more prominent windows, as well, with a square shape. Principal Sergio Coscia noted that “we wanted to make the windows as big as possible to get as much light in as we could. They kind of throw off the scale of the building in a nice way.” The rest of the building features, simple, sleek design, which allows the boxes to have more visual impact.
The final building includes a ground floor commercial office space below four levels of residential space, totaling 32 units, and a roof deck. The building borders Fairmount Park and provides residents convenient access to walking trails for year-round outdoor activity.
