Rohm and Haas (now Dow Chemical) moved to their new headquarters on Independence Mall in 1965. This 300,000 SF iconic building, designed by Pietro Belluschi and George Ewing, had seen few upgrades since its original construction. The design team collaborated with a Steering Committee to develop new departmental layouts throughout the 9 floors of the building.
The client requested that the design team utilize existing demountable partitions wherever possible, but open up the office plan to contemporary standards. New finishes and furniture standards were developed and implemented throughout the building. Bathrooms were brought up to modern accessibility standards, and new employee kitchen areas and lounges were built on each floor.
As part of the renovations, the lobby accommodated upgrades to the security system, reception desk, lighting and furniture. Additionally, approximately half of the exterior terraces was renovated with new cold fluid applied waterproofing systems and new landscaping. The building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
